Kovači Street is located in the heart of the Old Town, in a neighborhood which goes by the same name.
This street dates back to the early Ottoman period and its name comes from the Slavic word, kovači, which refers to the stone masons who handcarved stećci (medieval tombstones) during the Middle Ages. In the Ottoman period they made headstones for graves. The oldest Muslim graveyard and some of the oldest Muslim tombstones can be found in this area.
