Project for construction of the Cathedral was drafted by Josip Vancaš who combined elements of Romanesque and Gothic style creating a synthesis that distinguishes this church from the others of the same kind.
Part of the interior was also designed in the same style. The construction of the Cathedral began in 1884 and it was completed in 1889, when it was handed over to the Sarajevo City Municipality. This Cathedral resembles very much to Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. It has three towers and the central one ends with semi-circle ellipsis. Red rosette at the entry facade above decorated entrance, which is enriched with precisely stained-glass window, is simply fantastic. Vienna sculptor Hauszmann Alajos made statues at the entry facade. Saint Trinity retaining walls were made by Zagreb sculptor Dragan Morak and carved by Ivan Novotni in portal gable. The facade was made by two types of stones, yellow tough stone and reddish lime-stone. The stained-glass windows are designed by an architect Pl. Vancas in Insbruck and Vienna. Originally, the Cathedral was decorated with colours by Josip Volini, Ivan Betiz, Alexander Maximilian Scheitz and his son Ludovic. Ludovic Scheitz painted eight cylindrical portraits with chests of ecclesiastical teachers, which are the best painted parts of this church. The statues were modeled by Dragan Morak and carved by Ivan Novotni. Portrait of archbishop Stadler above his grave is a work of Marin Studin. During reconstruction of the cathedral in 1929, the second layer of decorating was carried out by painting companies from Stuttgart. This layer and parts of original pictures were eliminated during reconstruction of the church in the period from 1987 to 1989, when an artist Ante Martinovic made copies of the big wall, made in oil technique in 1:1 proportion, and fixed it on the top of damaged original. There are two towers at the entrance of the Cathedral, one with bell and the other with five smaller bells. The Cathedral can seat 1200 persons.
